The Golf Resort at Indian Wells has long been recognized as one of California's premier golf destinations. The property has been honored to receive three Silver Medal Awards from Golf Magazine, four Golden Links Awards (from Corporate Meetings and Incentives) and was voted as One of the Top Ten Resorts in the State (California Golf Magazine). What's more, this resort is going to get even better. Plans are under way for a 45 million dollar renovation, which includes the total re-routing of both championship golf courses. The City of Indian Wells recently approved this ambitious project, providing 20 million to redesign and modernize the golf courses, plus another 25 million for the infrastructure and reconfiguration of the golf resort – including a new elaborate clubhouse and practice facilities.

East Course Review

The East Course will remain open for public play through approximately November 2006, or whenever the rerouting and renovations of the new West layout has been completed. This course currently provides 3 sets of tees that play to distances and slopes measuring 6624 yards/133 slope, 6207 yards/131 slope, and 5502 yards with a slope of 118. This traditional, tree lined Ted Robinson layout was originally designed in 1986 and has been awarded 4 stars by Golf Digest Places to Play. The extremely rolling terrain features spectacular mountain views, with abundant palm trees and beautiful water hazards adding to the aesthetic quality of the environment. Raised, mounded green complexes create significant challenges, as recoveries from offline approaches are a considerable task. The current Bermuda rough – both along the fairways and greenside is quite penal as it has a tendency to grab the club thus closing the face…the ranger gave us a good bit of advice – keep it on the short grass! Do this and good scores are possible. Land in the rough and par is a chore.

Par View GPS is standard on all golf carts, and all tee boxes provide measurements to the center of the green. 150 yard stakes are situated on both sides of the fairways on par fours and fives, and the cart paths have indicators at 100, 150 and 200 yards. The current clubhouse features a spacious pro shop, a restaurant and lounge serving full breakfast and lunch menus, and locker rooms with showers. A fitting room is also available, for those wishing to purchase golf attire – with a nice variety of clothing and accessories on hand. There is a grass/mat range, two putting greens and a short game area with sand bunker. All will be reconstructed during the renovation project. The Callaway Performance Center is adjacent, with lessons and golf schools of various duration and intensity offered.

In November of 2005, reconstruction of the West Course will begin, with the plan being to keep one golf course open at all times. Once ready for play, the new West Course will reopen, while the East Course undergoes its extensive renovation project beginning approximately November 2006. The tentative date for total completion of the golf course renovations is set for sometime around December 2007. Below are some images of the "before and after" effect for the West Course.

The West Course will be highlighted by special water features including several lakes, creeks and waterfalls, plus indigenous and colorful landscaping. The East layout will feature elaborate bunkering, large greens, and wide sweeping fairways that will be designed to enhance the spectacular mountain vistas. Both courses will be re-designed by the team of Clive Clark and John Fought.
