Palm Springs Golf Course Review

Mountain Vista Golf Club - San Gorgonio Course - Palm Springs Golf Course 16

Mountain Vista Golf Club in Palm Desert features two 18-hole championship layouts, both designed by former PGA Tour Professional Billy Casper with the assistance of Greg Nash. Set Amidst the Santa Rosa, San Jacinto and San Gorgonio mountain ranges, the name of this facility is fitting, as the gorgeous mountain views are indeed spectacular. Cascading waterfalls, emerald fairways trimmed with flowers and tropical foliage, and wonderfully conditioned and moderately challenging green complexes make this an enticing golf experience for all levels of players.

Each course is serviced by its own clubhouse, with a snack bar (alcohol served) and pro shop on property. There also is a grass range plus putting and chipping green at the Santa Rosa and a large practice green at the El Gorgonio Course. Golfers will encounter finely manicured conditioning and beautiful landscaping at both properties, on layouts that provide a wonderful "resort golf" experience.

San Gorgonio Course

While a bit shorter than the Santa Rosa design, the San Gorgonio course is the more challenging of the two, with tighter driving holes featuring more extensive bunkering and some beautiful water hazards. Players can choose from 4 sets of tees that play to distances and slopes measuring 6669 yards/129 slope, 6217 yards/124 slope, 5661 yards/115 slope, and 5219 yards with a slope of 111 from the forward tees. The front nine is quite short (2889 from the back tees) while the back side is VERY LONG - with tee boxes that play to 3770, 3517, 3180 and 2935 yards. Long hitters will love the long par four 13th and 14th holes, which play to 451 and 465 yards from the tips.

Like the Santa Rosa design, the San Gorgonio presents large, undulating putting surfaces. These undulating green complexes are more protected by bunkers filled with sand, as opposed to the grass variety predominant on the Santa Rosa layout. The sprawling bunkers here are also higher lipped and more penal in nature. The average player will appreciate however, the abundant landing zones on the fairways and room for error that is provided near the greens, which are only slightly raised.

Golfers can not go wrong with either course at Mountain Vista. These wonderfully maintained layouts provide a fair challenge for all levels of players - and are as beautiful as most courses in the valley.
