PALM DESERT COUNTRY CLUB (760-345-2525)
Palm Springs Golf Course Review 2/20/07
Palm Desert Country Club in Palm Desert may is without a doubt one of the best golfing values in the Palm Springs area. Originally designed in the 1960's by Billy Bell, this course had seen its better days when it closed for remodeling in 2004. Twelve million dollars and an extensive amount of renovations later, the property re-opened in October 2006 - and was chosen - of all the courses in the country, as the recipient of Golf Inc Magazine's 2006 Renovation of the Year Course!
Gary Bickler accomplished the re-design, with newly constructed tees, fairways, greens, sand bunkers and water hazards. A state of the art irrigation system and new cart paths were also installed. The result is a wonderfully conditioned championship course that is inviting to the novice and avid golfers alike. Rates top out at well below $ 100 including cart prime time in 2007 ($85 weekends)!
On property is a clubhouse with pro shop, changing rooms plus spacious restaurant/lounge that is open daily for lunch and dinner, and also for breakfast on Saturday and Sunday. There is no driving range on property, but golfers can utilize the hitting cage, short game area with sand bunker, plus large putting green. There also is an executive 9-hole course, suitable for walking.
Four sets of tees play to distances measuring 6357, 6082, 5774 and , 5138 yards. Slope and course ratings were not available during our visit. On course there are 100, 150 and 200 yard markers in the form of red, white and blue stakes, plus 125 and 175 yardage block markers on all par fours and fives. Color coded flags indicate front, middle and back pin placements on the small to medium sized greens..
The course is meticulously cared for, with rye over-seeded during the winter months to keep a lush green appearance. 75 soft white sand bunkers can be found near the landing zones off the fairways or greenside. Water comes into play on just three holes, including the beautiful par 3 seventh and the wonderful closing holes on each side. There is a beautifully landscaped waterfall with cascading stream that separates the green complexes of the par four ninth and 18th holes.
Mountain views are present at nearly every turn along the mildly rolling terrain. With the manicured conditioning, fine service and nice amenities, Palm Desert Country Club gets our thumbs up as a recommended course to play that is also an outstanding value for the area.
