BIG ROCK GOLF & PUB at INDIAN SPRINGS(760-200-8988)
Palm Springs Golf Course Review
The Big Rock Golf and Pub at Indian Springs (formerly Indian Springs Golf & Country Club) is a David Ginkel design that is know as one of the consistently best conditioned courses in the desert, with tournament speed greens. Eight lakes, 2 streams and 3 dramatic waterfalls combine with 360 degree panoramic views and friendly country club service to earn accolades as a Golf Digest 4-star course, and one of the top 5 golf courses by Desert Golfer Magazine. The course begins with a fairly simple starting hole, but picks up quickly on the #2 signature hole and continues to impress in quality and design as one plays on. The Greens here roll true as they consistently play to a 10 on the stimpmeter.
Some of the more spectacular holes feature water hazards fronting the well conditioned and smooth rolling putting surfaces, but the gorgeous mountain scenery that can be viewed from most of the middle holes also stands on its own. This is a very beautiful golf course, and is also one that is player friendly while reasonably challenging for all levels of abilities. The fairways are wide enough to allow for some error off the tee, and the green complexes, while sometimes bunkered, are approachable. Numbers 14 and 15 were two of our favorite holes - with the former a par three that is all carry over a pond, while the latter is a par four with a water hazard on the left that can be reached off the tee.
There are 4 sets of tees that play to distances and slopes measuring 6794/127 slope, 6369 yards/123 slope, 6104 yards/120 slope and 5297 yards with a slope of 120. Sprinkler heads are measured to the center of the green, and GPS yardage system that is standard on all carts provides all the info golfers will need to plot their shots and to choose the correct club to reach these medium size and mildly undulating but quick putting surfaces.
On property are a grass range, putting green and short game area with sand bunker. The clubhouse was opened in January 2004 and features a delectable lunch menu daily in the well appointed Clubhouse Grille and Lounge. Dinner is available Friday through Monday. For now - we recommend the Southwest Burger - a great meal in itself! There also is a pro shop stocked with golf apparel and accessories, and the service throughout the property is friendly and efficient. It is obvious that the employees like working here...
Big Rock Golf renovated their pro shop and also added The Big Rock Pub with food, entertainment and drinks in a vibrant atmosphere! Click on this link for more info and see pictures below http://www.thebigrockpub.com/
Big Rock Golf & Pub is one of the outstanding golf values in the Palm Springs area. This is a traditional golfer friendly design, with no forced desert carries - and one that does not intimidate. It is a great course for beginning players - and provides enough hazards and beautiful scenery that the seasoned player can also enjoy the challenge. The conditioning on our visit was very good, and the mountain views are always outstanding. Highly recommended!
