Palm Springs Golf Course Review
Desert Dunes Golf Club in Desert Hot Springs is a gorgeous Robert Trent Jones Jr championship design that is widely considered as one of the premier layouts in the Coachella Valley. Rated 4 stars by Golf Digest Places to Play, this layout is carved from the area's natural sand dunes with thick native vegetation bordering the rolling, well manicured fairways. The surrounding mountains provide stunning vistas at every turn, making this a truly picturesque and memorable golf experience.
Four sets of tees play to distances and slopes measuring 6876 yards/142 slope, 6614 yards/134 slope, 6205 yards/124 slope for men and 126 for women, and 5359 yards with a slope of 116 from the forward sets. As the slope ratings indicate, this is an extremely challenging round from the two back tees, but is very player friendly from the two alternate sets. From the 6205 yard white tees, there are no par fours in the 400 + range, and the four beautiful par threes (two of which are featured in the photos below) play to between 141 and 162 yards.
The front side begins with some wide fairways featuring generous landing areas, but the course tightens up beginning with the ninth hole. The vegetation that borders both sides of many fairways is extremely dense, creating the need for accurate tee shots. Seventy one sand bunkers are situated near the landing areas off the tee or greenside, and water comes into play on four holes, including the last three on the front side. The back side is extremely fun to play, with elevation changes and crystal clear ponds and creeks providing aesthetics and challenge. Holes ten, eleven and twelve demand extremely accurate tee shots to narrow bush lined fairways.
On property at Desert dunes is a clubhouse with pro shop, locker rooms with showers, plus a snack area serving beverages and hot/cold sandwiches and bar items. There also is a putting green and grass range. On course golfers will find large boulders located on both sides of the fairways at 150 yards, plus 100, 150 and 200 yard blocks on all par fours and fives. Color coded flags indicate front, middle and back hole locations.
This is a highly recommended golf experience! The conditioning from tee to green and wonderful landscaping combine with spectacular mountain views to compliment an outstanding design.
