MOUNTAIN VISTAS GOLF CLUB (760-200-2200) Santa Rosa Course
Palm Springs Golf Course Review
Mountain Vista Golf Club in Palm Desert features two 18-hole championship layouts, both designed by former PGA Tour Professional Billy Casper with the assistance of Greg Nash. Set Amidst the Santa Rosa, San Jacinto and San Gorgonio mountain ranges, the name of this facility is fitting, as the gorgeous mountain views are indeed spectacular. Cascading waterfalls, emerald fairways trimmed with flowers and tropical foliage, and wonderfully conditioned and moderately challenging green complexes combine to make this an enticing golf experience for all levels of players.
Each course is serviced by its own clubhouse, with a snack bar (alcohol served) and pro shop on property. There also is a grass range plus putting and chipping green at the Santa Rosa course, and a practice green at the El Gorgonio course. Golfers will encounter finely manicured conditioning and beautiful landscaping at both properties, on layouts that provide a wonderful "resort golf" experience that is fair for the average golfer, yet challenging enough for top players from the back tees.
Santa Rosa Course
The Santa Rosa Course is the longer of the two layouts, and presents 4 sets of tee boxes that play to distances and slopes measuring 6720 yards.127 slope, 6162 yards/119 slope, 5693 yards/114 slope and 5305 yards/111 slope. As these slopes indicate, this course is a player-friendly layout with wide landing zones, and with top notch playing surfaces and interesting hole designs, is a perfect course for those on a Palm Spring golf vacation. Forty nine soft sand bunkers are scatted about the fairways or situated greenside, and water comes into play on nine holes. The sand traps are generally low lipped to provide ample chance at recoveries. Some holes are heavily bunkered, but there also are stretches where golfers will find no traps at all (IE - holes 5 - 8 have no traps at all, while the par five 13th has nine of them).
A great selling point of Palm Springs golf is the tremendous mountain vistas accentuated with clusters of beautiful palm trees. As indicated in the photos in this review, there is no shortfall of spectacular views on this course. The layout is chiseled into a residential community, with the fairways bordered by slopes that create somewhat of a "bowl effect" throughout the design. The greens are large and undulating, and are frequently protected by swales and grass bunkers. Holes 9 - 12 form a great group of golf holes, with water, palms and mountains combining to highlight what is so special about Palm Springs golf!
On course all tee boxes are marked, and 100, 150 and 200 yard markers are provided on the cart paths and fairways. Sprinkler heads are measured to the center of the green, and color coded flags indicate front, middle and back hole locations. This is a semi-private facility - call ahead for tee time information. We highly recommend this course - you will not be disappointed! For more info, visit our page for the Santa Rosa course on our Palm Springs web catalog of courses to play by clicking here.
